I always liked Opel’s big cars of the 80s and 90s, including the Omega B (MV6 manual isn’t a bad car at all), so its a bit hard to understand all the hate the Catera receives. I know the automatic slows things down considerably, but apart from that it can’t be much worse than its German equivalent.

I think the problem is that a Cadillac is supposed to be special, set apart from its more plebeian cousins, and the Catera didn’t come off as special or different enough. Remember that a luxury car purchase is as much about image as it is about the performance of the car itself.

You saw a similar sentiment come out when the XTS was released. Car reviewers who loved the new Impala bitched and moaned that the XTS (which shares its platform) sucked because it was a too expensive, FWD barge, and “why not just get the Impala for thousands less?” It didn’t matter that the XTS had so much that was different from and better than its platform cousin. All writers could see was a gussied up Chevy that wasn’t special enough to be worth the premium (even while they couldn’t find anything negative to say about the car itself). Image.
